Fabrizio Bindocci new President of Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino

Fabrizio Bindocci, new president of Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino

The Board of Directors has elected Fabrizio Bindocci to head the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Bindocci will remain in office until 2021. The Board also elected three Vice-Presidents: Giacomo Bartolommei (28 years old from the Caprili winery), as Treasurer, Stefano Cinelli Colombini (63-year-old CEO of Fattoria dei Barbi) who will head the Institutional and Associates Relationship Committee, and Riccardo Talenti (40-year-old owner of the eponymous winery) who will chair the Promotion Committee. Elisa Fanti of the Fanti Estate will head the Technical Committee.

Giacomo Bartolommei

Since 1999, 64-year-old Fabrizio Bindocci has been General Manager of the Franceschi family’s Il Poggione, one of the historic Brunello estates (for which he has worked since 1976). Previously Vice-President during Filippo Fanti’s first term of office (1998 – 2000), he held the office of President from June 2012 (taking over from Ezio Rivella who resigned for personal reasons) until 2016, having been re-elected as President in 2013. Since January 2018 he has headed the newly-established “Fondazione Territoriale Brunello di Montalcino” as President.

For three years, Bindocci will head a world-class entity which in 2018 produced 8 million bottles of Brunello and 5.4 million bottles of Rosso di Montalcino, with a turnover of 150 million euros. Exports account for 70% of total production, with the United States taking the biggest share, followed by Europe, Asian markets, Canada and Central and South America.

Riccardo Talenti

“The new Board – says Bindocci – has a strong mandate, confirmed by the presence of almost all the leading wineries. Brunello has long been a brand of the highest profile, but at this moment we believe that our country has need of something more. Brunello aims to be the symbol of the greatness of Italian viticulture, and this is this presidency’s only project. It is an ambitious project, which wants to put together quality, prestige, legend and an extraordinary group of winemakers to climb global summits We believe that the time is ripe, Italian wine must grow and Brunello intends being a protagonist, which is why my mandate will find its lifeblood in the indissoluble union between producers, Consortium and territory. The complementarity between the big producers, who represent some of the leading players in Italy’s wine industry, and small winemakers, the custodians of tradition and the highest standards of artisanal winemaking, has made Brunello the great wine it is. It is thanks to this  adds Bindocci – that in addition to its role as “manager of the appellation”, the Consortium will also increasingly be in a position to act as a real ‘territorial development agency’ and ‘energy catalyst’ for both production and promotional efforts. The Brunello Consortium is destined to act as a synthesiser, where the value of the territorial brand is more readily communicable, thus meeting the requirements of small and large wine estates, as well as responding to demands that arise from the political and institutional framework. In brief, the new frontier inevitably takes on the character of ‘promotion of the territory’. The Consortium will therefore stage a series of ‘out of season’ events and festivals, to enliven the territory also in those times of the year when the flow of tourists and/or wine enthusiasts is slower. All of this – concludes Bindocci – focusing on and investing in the younger generation”.
